This Bruichladdich 2005 has a beautiful deep rich colour and the tasting experience just gets better and better. The complex layers are very much on the sweeter side. The taste is exquisitely smooth, almost oily and slips down the throat like honey. Layers of flavours evolve going from initially sugary sweet to bigger, treacly and rounded very much due to the first fill bourbon barrel ageing. Honey cured bacon provides the Islay touch with just a pinch of salt to the sugar. Not much fruit but just enough red berries to balance the whisky perfectly, like a gorgeous dessert.
It is hard to believe this is a cask strength bottling, at 58.4%vol, it is smoother than a lot of 40% bottlings I have tried!
